The hotel
The Oriental and its writers.
The Oriental Hotel opened on the east bank of the Chao Phraya in 1876. That first Victorian building survives as the Authors' Wing, one of three, the other two added in the twentieth century. Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Noël Coward and James Michener all stayed, and the Authors' Lounge now has a salon for each of them, with photographs, quotations and some signed books.
For its 140th year in 2016 the hotel restored the Authors' and Garden Wings. The whole first floor of the old building became the Grand Royal Suite, six bedrooms with a conservatory and the original open balcony. Across the river, on the Thonburi bank, sit the spa, the Thai cooking school and Sala Rim Naam, all reached by the hotel's shuttle boat.
- The Authors' Lounge Restored to its late nineteenth-century look and opened onto the riverside terrace and gardens. Its four salons carry the names of writers who stayed.
- Across the water The spa, the cooking school and Sala Rim Naam are on the far bank, a short ride on the hotel boat.
- A butler for every room Butler service runs around the clock for all guests, from the Mandarin Rooms upwards.
