The hotel

The last of the Belle Époque grand hotels.

The Carlton opened in 1913, the last of the big five-star houses built in St. Moritz before the First World War ended that era of grand touring. It passed through several owners after 1945 before the Kipp-Bechtolsheimer family bought it in 1988. It now belongs to their Tschuggen Collection. The Carlton opens for the winter only, from December to March.

In 2006 the hotel closed for eighteen months. The Swiss designer Carlo Rampazzi kept the old building largely as it was and redid the interiors in strong, matched colours against the classical shell. The house was divided into just sixty suites, every one with a view of the lake. All have been refurnished again within the last three years, and a spa was built over three floors.

  • Da Vittorio The Cerea brothers' Italian restaurant, with two MICHELIN stars and 18 Gault&Millau points.
  • Carlton Spa Three floors and 1,200 square metres, with an indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool and a private spa suite.
  • The penthouse The Carlton Penthouse Suite covers 386 square metres, with views over the lake and the Engadin mountains.
