The hotel
A valley in the city.
Marriott and the Saudi company Dur Hospitality opened the hotel in March 2019, with Marriott Executive Apartments beside it. The design takes its lines from Wadi Hanifa, the valley that runs along the west of Riyadh. The building stays low, its walls cut like a dry canyon, and channels of water lead from the arrival court into a courtyard of date palms, cacti and flowering vines.
Inside, the walls carry about 690 contemporary works by more than fourteen Saudi artists, among them Mada, a piece by Maisa Shaldan that spans a whole wall. Forbes Travel Guide calls it the first hotel in the country with LEED Gold certification. Solar panels sit on the roof, and the Diplomatic Quarter's embassies and offices surround it.
