The hotel

Choga roofs on a volcanic coast.

The resort opened in 2023 as the first JW Marriott in South Korea. WATG drew the buildings from choga, the old thatched houses of Korea, and set them on a cliff above the lava coast of Seogwipo. Basalt and timber run through it. The lobby is modelled on a hanok, with carved woodwork and windows from floor to ceiling facing the sea.

Bill Bensley designed the interiors, taking his cues from the farming and fishing life of Jeju. The rooms are finished in natural wood and warm yellows, a nod to the canola fields nearby. Selected rooms have marble baths large enough for two, and four pools, indoors and out, look over the water. Route 7 of the Olle Trail, a coastal path of about 17.7 kilometres, passes directly by the resort.

  • Yeoumul An omakase counter built around seafood brought in by the haenyeo, the island's women divers.
  • The Flying Hog Wood fire and live fire grilling, listed in La Liste's top thousand restaurants.
  • Pools and SPA by JW Indoor and outdoor pools above the sea, and a spa of five treatment rooms.
