The hotel
A Georgian inn on Chapel Street.
Chapel Street runs down from the centre of Penzance towards the harbour, a street of blue plaques and antique dealers. Artist Residence took over one of its Georgian houses, a Grade II-listed inn, as the sequel to its first hotel in Brighton. The group now runs five, from London to Oxfordshire. From the station it is about ten minutes on foot, across the wharf and up Chapel Street.
The rooms were dressed one by one, with reclaimed furniture, wood-plank walls and baths standing in the bedroom, and no two look alike. At the back is the Clubhouse, as the MICHELIN Guide calls it: the bar and restaurant, a smokehouse and a garden, open from breakfast to the last drink. Newlyn harbour is a short way along the shore.
- The smokehouse Much of the meat and fish is cured and smoked on site; black-treacle-smoked brisket is one of the dishes.
- The garden A garden at the back with its own bar and table tennis, used for food and drinks in summer.
- On foot from the train Trains from London Paddington run to Penzance station, about five minutes' walk away.
