The hotel

From The Hotel Maria to Waldorf Astoria.

The hotel fills a group of protected civic buildings in Kruununhaka, the oldest designed by Evert Lagerspetz in 1885, with columns, friezes and symmetrical Neo-Renaissance fronts. It was developed as an independent luxury hotel, The Hotel Maria, which struggled through the pandemic and the loss of Russian visitors. On 20 August 2025 it became Waldorf Astoria Helsinki, the brand's first hotel in the Nordics, managed by Hilton for M&L Group.

Inside, the tall ceilings and period details stay, with furniture made by hand and paintings by the Finnish artist Pia Feinik. The spa sits beneath a glass-roofed atrium and works on heat, steam and cold, the Finnish way, with plunge pools beside the saunas. A year after the change of name, the 2026 MICHELIN selection gave the hotel one Key, the only one in Helsinki.

  • Sauna under glass Finnish saunas, steam and cold plunges in an atrium spa, with treatments by Biologique Recherche.
  • The Peacock Bar Named after Peacock Alley at the original Waldorf Astoria in New York, with cocktails given a Finnish turn.
  • Saunas in the rooms Some rooms and suites have a private sauna or steam room of their own.
