The hotel

A Riviera in the Highlands.

Donald Matheson, general manager of the Caledonian Railway, had the idea in 1910 after a holiday in Strathearn: a country house hotel with golf. James Braid's King's and Queen's courses opened in 1919, but the war had halted the building, and the hotel only opened on 7 June 1924, with a gala ball broadcast on the BBC. It was hailed as a Riviera in the Highlands.

It served as a military hospital in the Second World War and reopened in 1947. Jack Nicklaus added a third course in 1993, which hosted the Ryder Cup in 2014, nine years after the G8 summit met here. In 2015 a group led by Sharan Pasricha, founder of Ennismore, bought the hotel from Diageo and began six years of renovation. Through it all the hotel has kept the AA's Five Red Stars every year since 1986.

  • Three courses The King's and The Queen's by James Braid and the PGA Centenary by Jack Nicklaus, with a nine-hole course and pitch and putt besides.
  • Country pursuits Falconry, a gundog school, clay shooting, riding, fishing and off-road driving across the estate.
  • The Spa and Health Club Twenty treatment rooms in the spa, and two indoor pools, an outdoor onsen and a thermal suite in the Health Club, free for guests.
