The hotel
A palace built from scratch on the west bank.
Zeina Aboukheir, a Lebanese photographer and jewellery designer, fell for Luxor from the deck of a felucca. With the French-Egyptian architect Olivier Sednaoui she built Al Moudira new, in the old style, on farmland across the Nile from the town: domes, arches, painted frescoes and courtyards with fountains, in ten hectares of gardens and palms.
It opened in 2002 and grew mostly by word of mouth. She furnished each suite with antiques collected over the years, set against stone, tiles and gold leaf. Later came villas with butlers and marble plunge pools, one of them her own former house. In 2023 Al Moudira became the first Relais & Châteaux hotel in Egypt.
