The hotel
A reserve bought to stop the loggers.
Roque Sevilla, a Quito businessman and a former mayor of the city, bought this stretch of cloud forest in the late 1990s to keep it from the timber companies. A hotel came much later. The only road in is still the rough track the loggers cut, and the reserve around the lodge is used for research and conservation as well as for guests.
Mashpi Lodge opened in 2012 at 950 metres above sea level. The rooms are on three floors behind walls of glass: those on the ground floor look into the forest floor, those above into the canopy. The reserve has many waterfalls, and guests can bathe at the foot of them, between walks in the forest and visits to the butterfly farm.
- The Dragonfly An aerial gondola running for about two kilometres above the canopy, over forest that was bought to save it from logging.
- The Sky Bike A pedal-powered bike on a cable, about 200 metres across a gorge at the height of the treetops, included in the stay.
- Life Center The lodge's Life Center and butterfly farm, with a hummingbird centre at the entrance to the reserve.

Every room has floor-to-ceiling glass. Ground-floor rooms face the forest floor; higher up, the view is the canopy.

Before you go.
- Arrival Check-in from 3 pm, by 4 pm at the latest; check-out by 11 am. Day visits are not possible, and the lodge advises at least two nights.
- Meals All meals and soft drinks are included in the rate. Alcohol and spa treatments are extra.
- Children Welcome from the age of two.
- Pets Not accepted.
Getting there
Flying to Mindo.
Every arrival lands at Mariscal Sucre International in Quito, the airport of entry for both airlines and private jets. From there the lodge is about three hours by road, the last part on a forest track, and it can arrange the transfer.

- About three hours, according to the lodge. Transfers can be booked through the lodge, and some packages include a shared one.

- One night is the minimum and there are no day visits. The lodge recommends at least two nights to see the forest properly.
