The hotel

From the de Burgos to the Guinnesses.

The Anglo-Norman de Burgos built the first castle here in 1228, on the edge of a monastic site at Cong. The Brownes added a hunting lodge in 1715. In 1852 Sir Benjamin Guinness bought the estate and enlarged it to 26,000 acres, and his son Arthur, later Lord Ardilaun, rebuilt the west wing in the Gothic style between 1875 and 1881, with the architects James Franklin Fuller and George Ashlin.

Noel Huggard bought the castle in 1939 and opened it as a hotel. John Mulcahy restored it in 1970 and doubled its size. In 1951 John Ford shot scenes for his film with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara in the grounds. Red Carnation Hotels bought Ashford in May 2013 and reopened it in April 2015 after a long restoration, with all 820 windows replaced and a new lead roof.

  • Falconry The estate is home to the oldest falconry school in Ireland, open to guests.
  • Lough Corrib Boating on the lake, with tennis, clay shooting, golf and riding on the estate.
  • The Spa The Spa at Ashford Castle has won awards more than once, with the Éalú pool and gym alongside.
