The hotel
The Lansdowne lodge on the Sheen.
In the 1660s Sir William Petty was granted much of south-west Kerry and founded the town of Kenmare. His son-in-law, the first Earl of Kerry, built Sheen Cottage beside the falls, and the house later served the family, the Lansdownes, as a summer residence. Over the next centuries it was a fishing lodge, a barracks for anti-Treaty forces and a commercial fishery.
It opened as a hotel in 1991, and its restaurant of the time, La Cascade, held a MICHELIN star from 1993 to 1998. The estate covers 300 acres on the Sheen, five minutes' drive from Kenmare. Beside the 72 rooms there are now three cottages and two villas. A group of Thai investors bought the estate in 2018; the Mayrange Hospitality Group runs it, and it belongs to Relais & Châteaux.
- On the river Fishing on fifteen miles of water, with falconry, riding, archery and clay shooting on the estate.
- The Buick The lodge keeps a 1936 Buick Roadmaster, and a drive in it is one of the outings on the list.
- Golf nearby The Ring of Kerry Golf Club, a heathland and parkland course that belongs to the lodge, is about ten minutes away by car.
