The hotel
Where the winter season was invented.
Johannes Badrutt took over a village inn in 1856 and turned it into the Kulm, the first hotel in St. Moritz. In the autumn of 1864 he made his British summer guests a wager: come back for the winter, and if it disappointed them he would refund them. They came back, and winter tourism in the Alps is said to have begun with that bet.
The hotel today spreads over four buildings of differing styles, with a colonnaded lobby and a marble staircase. The French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon has renovated most of the 150 rooms, keeping the carved pine. In the Kulm Park outside are curling, a natural ice rink and the start of the Olympia Bob Run. St. Moritz hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and again in 1948, and its bob run is the last one in the world still built of natural ice.
- Kulm Park Curling, a natural ice rink and the Olympia Bob Run in winter; a nine-hole golf course and tennis in summer.
- Kulm Spa A 20-metre indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool, saunas, steam baths and a saltwater grotto.
- Alpine Sports Lounge The ski room, concierge and boutique by Foster + Partners, lined in Swiss stone pine, opened for the winter of 2025.
