The city

A crater in the forest of Wallis.

Wallis is a low island ringed by a lagoon with thirteen uninhabited islets. Inland lie crater lakes, and Lalolalo is one of the largest in the Pacific; a lookout built for visitors takes in all of it at once. The island has no grand hotels. People stay in small family-run places, and every one of them cooks.

The climate barely changes over the year: 24 to 31 °C, humid, with rain in every month. It eases a little from June to September. Cyclones are possible from mid-November to mid-April.

  • Lalolalo lookout A lookout built so that the whole lake can be seen in one view.
  • Talietumu A Tongan fortress, one of the best preserved in the Pacific.
  • Mata Utu cathedral Walls of lava rock and coral, and a richly decorated interior, in the island’s small capital.

When to go

June to September.

Highs stay at 29 to 31 °C all year and the lagoon at 28 to 29 °C. Every month is wet on the long-term averages. June to September brings the least rain, and the cyclone season runs from mid-November to mid-April.
