The city
The island of the land divers.
Pentecost rises sharply out of the sea, and on the east coast the ridges fall almost straight to the water. The first view comes from the window of a small plane. There are no resorts here: visitors stay in villages, with hosts arranged in advance.
From mid-April to June, during the yam harvest, the men of Pentecost leap from tall wooden platforms with vines bound around their ankles. The ceremony, the nangol, is held up as the origin of bungee jumping. The tourism office asks that you go through a community arrangement and stay long enough to understand what you are watching.
- The nangol The land-diving ceremony of the yam harvest, held from mid-April to June.
- Sara The village where Walter Lini, who led Vanuatu to independence, was born.
- A village day Kastom dances, mat weaving and the making of kava, with local hosts.
