The city
Where the constitution was signed.
Captain Cook anchored in the bay in 1777. A century later, on 4 November 1875, King George Tupou I proclaimed Tonga’s constitution here, and Nuku’alofa became the capital of the kingdom. About 27,600 people live in the town and some 70,000 on Tongatapu as a whole.
Much of the centre burned in the riots of 2006 and was rebuilt from 2008. In 2022 the tsunami that followed the eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai damaged the city again. Come in the dry season, May to October, when afternoons stay around 25 °C; from July the humpback whales are in the water around Tongatapu.
- The Royal Palace The king’s wooden residence of 1867, closed to visitors but in full view from the waterfront, above the shore called Fanga-tapu, the sacred beach.
- Ha’amonga ’a Maui A trilithon in the east of the island, its uprights weighing 30 to 40 tonnes each, raised under Tu’itātui, the eleventh Tu’i Tonga.
- Mapu ’a Vaea The blowholes in the coral reef along Tongatapu’s south-west coast.
