The city

Rainforest on the Mazaroni plateau.

Brownsberg has been protected since 1969 and covers some 12,000 hectares of the Brokopondo district, about 130 kilometres south of Paramaribo. The mountain rises to 500 metres on the Mazaroni plateau, and looks out over the Brokopondo Reservoir.

Botanists put the plant count near 1,450 species. Birders come for the 350 or so bird species, grey-winged trumpeters and toucans among them; on the ground you may meet red-rumped agoutis. STINASU runs the park, with simple lodgings, an information centre and a restaurant up on the mountain.

Arriving

Land at Zanderij, drive south.

Zanderij, the country’s international airport, is the nearest runway of any size: about 56 kilometres from the park in a straight line. No airstrip at Brownsberg itself turned up in our research.

No station records the park, so these are Paramaribo’s averages; up at 500 metres and well inland, the park may be cooler and wetter. The heaviest rain comes in May and June. September and October are the driest months, both under 90 mm.
