The city

Carvers, fishers and coral.

Marovo is often described as the largest lagoon in the world enclosed by a double barrier reef. It covers about 700 square kilometres of the Western Province, scattered with islands, some lived on. People here speak Marovo, fish and grow their own food, and the men are known for carving ebony, hardwood and kerosene wood.

The airstrip at Seghe is a wartime one. Marines took Segi Point on 30 June 1943 and Seabees had a coral runway ready by 18 July, used by P-40 fighters. Today it brings the scheduled flights from Honiara, Munda and Gizo. Rain is heavy all year, over 200 mm even in the drier months.

  • Uepi Island A barrier island between the lagoon and the deep water of New Georgia Sound, with dive sites ten minutes away by boat.
  • Segi Point The 1943 fighter strip, still the way in, where the 44th Pursuit Squadron flew its P-40s.
  • Lagoon carving Ebony, hardwood and kerosene wood, worked by the men of the lagoon, who have long been known as carvers.

Seghe's coral strip, about a thousand metres long, is the lagoon's airport, an hour's flight from Honiara.

When to go

May to October.

Figures for Seghe, on the lagoon. Afternoons stay at about thirty degrees and the sea between 28 and 30, but it rains hard in every month, from about 200 mm in June to 380 in January. Tourism Solomons treats May to October as the dry season for the islands.
