The city
Old Town and the planned capital.
Lilongwe started as a boma on the Lilongwe River around 1902 and took over from Zomba as capital in 1975, though the last ministries only arrived in 2005. Districts are called Areas, from 1 to 58, and the numbers follow the order in which each was created, so the number tells you nothing about where an Area lies.
Old Town keeps the markets, the bus stations and the cafés. The newer city has the ministries on Capital Hill, the embassies and the hotels. Between the two runs a strip of forest along the Lingadzi River, and Malawians call Lilongwe the green city for its gardens and trees. Close to a million people lived here at the 2018 census.
- Lilongwe Wildlife Centre Seventy hectares of forest on the Lingadzi River, with a boardwalk, a bird hide and trails of up to five kilometres; closed on Wednesdays.
- Kamuzu Mausoleum The tomb of Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi's first president, in War Memorial Park.
- Old Town markets Street stalls and walled markets in the oldest part of the city.
