The city

A mountain still at work.

For centuries the Soufrière Hills were a green ridge above Plymouth. In July 1995 the volcano began to erupt; in June 1997 a flow killed nineteen people, and the capital, the airport and most of the south were given up. About fifteen thousand people lived on Montserrat before. Today just over five thousand do, all of them in the north, and the summit has grown from 915 metres to about 1,050.

The mountain has been outwardly calm since February 2010, though the scientists who watch it say it is still active. Plymouth, on the coast below, lies under ash and rock. The south is an exclusion zone, divided into sectors that open and close with the hazard level, and the zone nearest the crater stays shut to everyone.

  • Montserrat Volcano Observatory On the Centre Hills near Flemings, facing the volcano, with a film of the eruptions and a viewing deck that is open to all.
  • Jack Boy Hill A lookout in the north-east, and the one viewpoint left open even at the highest hazard level.
  • Garibaldi Hill The closest viewpoint over Plymouth and the volcano, open when the hazard level allows.

Arriving

Twenty minutes from Antigua.

The volcano destroyed the old airport in 1997. Its replacement at Gerald's, in the north, opened in 2005, and its runway is under 600 metres long. Almost everyone comes through Antigua.
