The city

A forest the villages chose to keep.

Kakum covers some 375 square kilometres of forest behind the coast, named after the river that rises inside it. It was a forest reserve from 1931, and when it became a national park in 1992 the push came from the people who live around it.

Most visitors come for the canopy walkway, seven bridges strung between the treetops near Abrafo, one of only three such walkways in Africa. Birders have confirmed 266 species, butterflies number more than six hundred, and the forest holds Ghana's densest population of forest elephants.

From Accra, by way of Cape Coast.

The park is reached by road from Cape Coast. For long-haul flights the airport is Accra, east along the coast; Takoradi, to the west, has domestic services from the capital.
