The city

Where the forest meets the beach.

Loango became a national park in 2002. It covers 1,550 square kilometres between the Nkomi and Ndogo lagoons, takes in part of the Iguéla Lagoon, and ends in more than a hundred kilometres of coast where nobody lives. Elephants, buffalo, hippos, gorillas and leopards all come out onto the beaches.

From July to September humpback whales pass close offshore, and boats go out to meet them. That is also the heart of the dry season. In the forest behind the coast, researchers at Yatouga have habituated Gabon's first group of western lowland gorillas. The lodges on the lagoon have been closed and are due to reopen at the end of 2026.

Arriving

There is no road in. Travellers fly into Libreville, take a light aircraft to an airstrip near Omboué or Port-Gentil, and finish by boat across the Iguéla Lagoon; the lodge arranges each leg.

When to go

June to September.

Hot and wet from October to May, with more than 350 mm in November. From June to September the rain all but stops and the days settle at 27 or 28 °C, the months when the whales are offshore.
